FAQ
Pricing & Quotes
How much does junk removal cost in Chicago?
Single-item curbside pickup in Chicago starts at $79 (mattress, single piece of furniture, small appliance). Full-service indoor removal starts at $149. For multi-item jobs we price by truck volume - a typical 1/4 truck runs $249, a half-truck $399, and a full truck $679. Most one-bedroom apartment cleanouts land between $479 and $679. The fastest way to get an accurate number is to text photos to (773) 377-4148 - we can usually quote within minutes during business hours.
How does your pricing work?
We use two pricing models. Single-item pricing is a flat rate per item (couch, mattress, appliance, TV) - best for one or two pieces. Volume pricing charges for how much space your items take up in the truck, broken into eighths from 1/8 truck up to a full truck. Mixed loads - garage cleanouts, basements, apartments - get volume pricing. All prices include labor, hauling, and disposal/donation/recycling routing.
Is there a minimum charge?
Yes. $79 minimum for curbside pickup (items already outside). $149 minimum for full-service (we come inside and get them). This covers the cost of dispatching a crew and truck to your Chicago address.
Can you give me a price over the phone or by text?
Yes - we give confident estimates over the phone or from photos texted to (773) 377-4148. For single items, the phone quote is usually within $20 of the on-site price. For mixed loads and cleanouts, the photo quote gives a range; the exact final number is confirmed on site once the crew sees the access and the actual volume. We don't raise the price after work starts without telling you and getting your OK.
Are estimates free?
Yes. Phone estimates, photo estimates, and on-site walkthrough estimates are all free, no obligation. You only pay if you approve the price and we do the work.
Do you charge extra for stairs, walk-ups, or long carries?
Yes, small surcharges apply for difficult access. Walk-ups above the 2nd floor: +$15 per additional flight (a 4th-floor walk-up adds $30). Long carries over 50 feet from the truck to the item: +$25. Basements are included for the first flight - additional flights below grade add $15 each. All surcharges are disclosed before any work begins.
FAQ
How It Works
What's the difference between curbside pickup and full-service junk removal?
Curbside pickup ($79+) means you put the items outside - curb, alley, loading dock - and we load them. Lowest price option. Full-service removal ($149+) means the crew comes inside, carries items out, handles disassembly if needed, and sweeps the spot when done. Pick curbside if you can move the items yourself; pick full-service if they're upstairs, heavy, or you'd rather not deal with it. Same truck, same disposal, same day either way.
How does the booking process work?
Three steps. (1) You call, text photos, or fill out the form on our Contact page. (2) We respond - usually within minutes during business hours - with a price estimate and a window. (3) The crew arrives during the agreed window, confirms the price on site, removes the items, and you pay by Zelle, Venmo, card (+2%), or cash. That's it. No deposits, no card upfront, no surprises.
Do you offer same-day or next-day junk removal?
Same-day pickup is often available, especially weekdays outside peak weekend windows. Next-day is almost always available. Same-day depends on what the crew is already working that day - call or text (773) 377-4148 and we'll tell you what's open before you commit.
How much notice do you need to schedule?
For single-item pickups, often a few hours. For multi-truck cleanouts (estates, large garages, offices), we like 2–7 days of notice to plan the crew size. End-of-month and weekend slots fill up first - book a few days ahead if you're moving out at month-end.
Do I need to be home when the crew arrives?
Someone with access to the property needs to let the crew in - that can be you, a building staff member, a property manager, or a representative you've authorized. You don't have to stay for the entire job; the crew can text you for any decisions and the final price confirmation. For curbside pickups, you don't need to be present at all as long as the items are accessible and we know what's going.
Will you call before arriving?
Yes. The crew calls or texts 15–30 minutes before arriving so you have a heads-up. If you're not reachable, they still arrive at the agreed window - but the heads-up is standard.
How long does a typical junk removal job take?
Single-item pickups: 15–30 minutes on site. A 1/4-truck job: 30–60 minutes. A 1/2-truck job: 1–2 hours. A full truck or single-bedroom apartment cleanout: 2–4 hours. Multi-truck cleanouts (estates, large offices): 4–8 hours, sometimes split across days.
FAQ
What We Take and Don't Take
What items do you remove?
Almost anything that fits in a truck and isn't on the exclusion list below. Furniture (couches, dressers, tables, chairs, bed frames), mattresses, appliances (fridges, washers, dryers, dishwashers), electronics (TVs, computers, printers), household goods (boxes, bags, decor, rugs), yard equipment, light renovation debris, office furniture, retail fixtures. Whole apartments, garages, basements, attics, storage units, and offices. If you're unsure about something specific, text a photo to (773) 377-4148.
What items do you NOT take?
The legally-restricted short list: hazardous chemicals (paint, gasoline, motor oil, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals), propane tanks, asbestos or asbestos-containing materials, medical waste (sharps, prescription medication, blood-soaked items), firearms and ammunition, explosives and flares, human or animal waste, active infestation materials, and items subject to a probate hold. Chicago's Household Chemicals & Computer Recycling Facility on Goose Island accepts most household hazardous waste for free.
Do you remove items from inside my home or apartment?
Yes - that's full-service removal. The crew comes in, carries the items out (stairs, walk-ups, elevators), protects banisters and doorframes where needed, and sweeps the spot when done. Full-service starts at $149 minimum. Curbside (cheaper) is available if you can move the items outside yourself.
Do you take refrigerators and freezers?
Yes. Refrigerators, freezers, wine fridges, mini fridges, and AC units with refrigerant all go through a certified refrigerant-recovery partner before scrap - required by EPA rules. There's a $30 refrigerant surcharge on top of the appliance price. Please empty and ideally defrost the fridge before pickup so water doesn't leak when we tilt it.
Do you take old televisions, including CRT and tube TVs?
Yes, all TV types. Flat-screen TVs are $49 single-item (curbside). CRT and tube TVs carry a higher fee ($79) because the lead-laden tubes have to go through a specific e-waste recycler that handles the cathode-ray separation.
Do you take mattresses with stains or possible bedbug exposure?
Yes, but tell us before booking. Stained or visibly damaged mattresses are still accepted; they just can't go through donation channels and follow a different disposal path. Suspected bedbugs: we still take the mattress, with a small surcharge for special handling - but please wrap it in a sealed mattress bag before we arrive to prevent spread.

What are your hours of operation?
Monday – Friday: 7:00 AM – 8:00 PM · Saturday: 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM · Sunday: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM. We answer calls, texts, and emails during these hours. Crews work the same windows; same-day jobs need to be confirmed earlier in the day to fit a route.
Do you work weekends and evenings?
Yes. Saturday and Sunday pickups are standard. Evening pickups (up to 8 PM weekdays, 7 PM Saturday) are also available. Weekend and end-of-month slots fill up first - book a few days ahead if you have a hard deadline.
Do you respond after hours?
We do our best. Texts and emails sent after hours get read first thing the next morning. If you have an urgent request outside our hours (a move-out tomorrow morning, for example), send the request anyway with "URGENT" in the message - we'll triage as early as possible.
FAQ
Chicago-Specific
Can you handle high-rise condo buildings with elevator and dock rules?
Yes - high-rise work is one of our specialties. We coordinate the freight elevator booking, work within the loading-dock window, follow building check-in rules, and provide a Certificate of Insurance for buildings that require one (email info@junkmoovers.com to request). We've been doing this in Chicago for years through our parent moving company, MOOvers Chicago Inc.
Can you do alley pickup instead of curb pickup?
Yes, and alley pickup is often easier in Chicago - alleys are wider for trucks and there's less obstruction than parking-restricted streets. Tell us at booking that the items will be in the alley, give us the address and a rough description of where in the alley, and we'll route the truck appropriately. Same curbside pricing applies.
Can you provide a Certificate of Insurance for my building or HOA?
Yes - free, usually same-day. Email info@junkmoovers.com with your building's certificate-holder name and address (your building manager can provide this), and we'll send the COI within a few business hours.
What's the difference between junkMOOvers and Chicago's free city bulk pickup?
Chicago Streets & Sanitation offers free bulk pickup through 311. The trade-offs: wait times of 1–4 weeks, you have to move items to the alley or curb yourself, you only get the one assigned date, and the city won't take inside removal, stairs, or apartments. junkMOOvers costs money but is fast (often same-day), comes inside, handles disassembly and access, and routes usable items for donation.
Does Chicago weather affect the pickup schedule?
Rarely. Crews work in rain, snow, and Chicago winters. Severe weather events - heavy ice storms, blizzards with travel advisories, hazardous wind - may push a pickup to the next safe day; we'll call you to reschedule and there's no fee.
FAQ
Trust, Insurance, and Safety
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. junkMOOvers operates under MOOvers Chicago Inc. with full liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage. Our crews are insured for property damage and on-the-job injury, which protects the building, the customer, and the crew. Certificates of Insurance for specific Chicago buildings are available on request at info@junkmoovers.com.
Will your crew damage walls, floors, doorframes, or banisters?
Damage is rare and we work to prevent it. Crews bring banister protectors, door-frame guards, and floor blankets for narrow access situations. Before any difficult move, we walk the access path with you. If anything is damaged during the job, our insurance covers it - tell us before we leave and we'll handle it directly.
How do you handle privacy and data on electronics you remove?
We strongly recommend you wipe data off any phone, computer, tablet, or hard drive before we pick it up. We are not a data-destruction service. For business cleanouts where data destruction is required, we can refer you to a certified data-destruction partner who handles the wipe before we haul.
FAQ
Payment and Cancellation
What payment methods do you accept?
Zelle and Venmo (no fees), credit/debit card (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, Discover - 2% surcharge), and cash. No checks. Payment is due on completion of the job - no deposit required for standard residential work.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancel or reschedule 48 or more hours before your scheduled service date - no charge. Cancel less than 48 hours before - $79 minimum cancellation fee to cover the crew and truck capacity reserved for your job. To cancel, call or text (773) 377-4148 or email info@junkmoovers.com.
FAQ
Recycling and Donation
What happens to my items after they leave my home?
Three paths: donate, recycle, or transfer station for disposal. Items in good condition go to local Chicago donation partners. Recyclable materials (metal, cardboard, e-waste, working appliances) go to recyclers. Items that can't be donated or cleanly recycled go to a permitted transfer station for proper disposal.
Can I request that my items be donated to a specific charity?
Yes - tell us before the job. If you have a preferred charity (your church, a women's shelter, a veterans' group, a specific Chicago donation partner), we'll do our best to route donatable items there. We can also request a donation receipt from the receiving organization if you'd like one for tax purposes.
