How to Prepare for a Junk Removal Appointment
Most junk removal appointments take 30 minutes to 2 hours. With a little preparation, you can make the job faster, smoother, and more efficient. Here’s how to set yourself up for success.
1. Decide What’s Going Before We Arrive
The biggest time-waster on a junk removal job is indecision. If you’re still making decisions about what to keep while the crew is standing there waiting, the job takes longer - and on hourly-rate companies, that costs you money.
What to do: Walk through your space 24 hours before the appointment. Mark or move the items you’re certain are going. Anything you’re undecided about, put in a separate zone to decide on your own time.
2. Clear a Path
Our crew will carry items from wherever they are in your home to the truck. But they’re faster (and safer) if there’s a clear path to walk. Before we arrive:
- Move anything blocking doorways or hallways
- Clear a path down staircases
- Make sure the elevator button is accessible (for high-rises)
- Unlock any rooms, storage areas, or garages we’ll need to enter
3. Separate Items You’re Keeping
If you have items mixed in with things to remove (especially in garages, basements, and storage units), separate the keepers before we arrive. Tape a piece of paper to items you’re keeping, or move them to a designated “keep” zone so there’s no confusion.
4. Know Your Building’s Rules
For Chicago apartments and condos:
- Reserve the service elevator in advance if your building requires it
- Check move-out hours - many buildings restrict haul-out to weekday business hours
- Alert the front desk that a junk removal crew is coming so there’s no access delay
5. Send Photos for a More Accurate Quote
If you haven’t already sent photos, do it before the appointment so we can arrive with the right number of crew members and the right truck size. Surprises on arrival can require a second trip - which means more cost and more time.
6. Plan for Where to Direct the Crew
When we arrive, we’ll do a quick walkthrough with you. Have a mental map ready:
- Where is everything that’s going?
- Is there anything heavy that needs extra care?
- Are there items you want sorted for donation vs. trash?
Day-Of Prep Checklist
- Items to remove are identified and separated
- Path is clear from removal point to front door
- Elevator or service access arranged if needed
- Items you’re keeping are clearly marked
- Heavy or fragile items noted
- Pets secured so they don’t get in the way
Prepared clients move faster. We can often complete a well-prepared job in half the time of an unprepared one - which means you’re done sooner and we can help the next customer.
