Garage Cleanout Checklist for Chicago Homeowners

The average Chicago garage hasn’t been fully cleaned out in over a decade. If yours is overdue, a strategic approach makes all the difference between a productive weekend and a frustrating one.

Here’s the checklist we give clients before a professional garage cleanout.

Before the Cleanout: Planning (1–2 Days Before)

  • Block out enough time - Most garages take 4–8 hours for a full clearout, or 1–2 hours if you hire a crew
  • Get supplies: boxes, trash bags, a permanent marker for labeling, a folding table for sorting
  • Identify donation centers near you and confirm their hours and what they accept
  • Check Chicago e-waste drop-off locations for electronics and TVs
  • Note any hazardous materials (paint, chemicals, propane tanks) - these need special disposal

Sorting: The Four-Pile Method

Set up four zones before you start moving anything:

  1. KEEP - items you actively use and will store in the garage
  2. DONATE - items in good condition someone else could use
  3. RECYCLE - metals, electronics, cardboard
  4. TRASH/HAUL - broken, deteriorated, or unsalvageable items

Chicago-specific disposal notes:

  • Electronics (TVs, computers): Can’t go in regular trash in Illinois. Find a certified e-waste drop-off or schedule pickup.
  • Paint cans: Dry/hardened paint can go in regular trash. Wet paint is hazardous - check Chicago’s hazmat disposal schedule.
  • Propane tanks: Take to Home Depot or your local hardware store for exchange or proper disposal.
  • Motor oil, antifreeze: Take to an AutoZone or O’Reilly Auto Parts - most accept these for free recycling.

Room-by-Room (Section by Section) Checklist

Back Wall / Deep Storage

  • Old furniture - donate or haul
  • Appliances - schedule removal or haul
  • Boxes of “someday” items - sort ruthlessly
  • Holiday décor - keep only what you used in the last 3 years

Side Walls

  • Bikes - donate if unused for 2+ years
  • Sports equipment - sports org donations or trash
  • Garden tools - keep functional ones, trash the rest
  • Power tools - keep if working, trash or donate otherwise

Floor / Middle

  • Car-related items (oil cans, coolant jugs) - proper recycling
  • Automotive junk - donate or haul
  • Lumber and building materials - haul or local builder recycling

After the Cleanout

  • Sweep and blow out the garage
  • Wipe down shelving you’re keeping
  • Arrange what stays in logical zones (garden, car, sports, tools)
  • Schedule a junk removal pickup if you ended up with more haul-away items than expected
